The Role of Women in The Church

Paul defied the societal norms of an age where women were regarded as children, unable to testify in court, writing that: “There is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) He followed the example of Christ who shockingly talked with women (Mary, Martha and Mary, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Chuza, Susanna, and “many others,” even an outcast Samaritan woman, Luke 8:1-3) about issues that matter. They supported him financially, and he appointed them to active roles in his ministry.

“Women were created from the rib of man to be beside him, not from his head to top him, nor from his feet to be trampled by him, but from under his arm to be protected by him, near to his heart to be loved by him.” Matthew Henry paraphrasing Augustine

As the Church focuses on the role women should play in the Body going forward, we can gather ideas by discussing the role women have played in Church History! As Mark Twain said: “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes.”
